"Do you know Luban?"
I went along with the invitation to the upper layers, but since even Zelkis had never been there, I found myself thinking, Why again? so I asked.
"Luban… you mean the Professor?"
Professor Luban.
Not only in dungeon exploration, but also in exploring the demon frontier, he’s racked up a lot of achievements—and I’m pretty sure he even holds some kind of minor noble title, like a barony or something.
Even though he’s still young, he’s successfully taken down Demon King Type monsters several times.
There aren’t any easy-to-understand ranks like S or A, but he’s one of the leading adventurers not just in Mesaria, but even within the alliance.
Of course his combat ability is outstanding, but he also shows high aptitude in investigation and research, and somewhere along the way he apparently picked up the nickname “Professor.”
I’ve never seen him myself, but you hear about him a lot even at the Adventurer Guild.
I hear his party has four members, and the other three are women—on top of that, it’s supposedly a harem party full of beauties.
So jealous…
I’d wanted to see them at least once, but…
"Yeah, that Luban. Seems he needs an upper-layer relic as material for an experiment, but he couldn’t find a partner to team up with by chance, so he specifically requested you and me."
"I get why he’d pick Alec, but me too?"
People are starting to know about me to some extent, and if that’s the case, it feels like he should also realize I’m not exactly suited to teaming up with someone. So what’s the deal?
"I’m the shield, and you scout from above. He’s probably counting on us as fighting strength, but his real aim is to pitch himself—and to evaluate us."
"Pitch himself is one thing, but evaluate us…?"
That just makes it, Why me? even more.
"Sounds like he’s got a grasp on the young lady’s marriage and the new territory situation. That’s probably what this is for. Elena is known even in the royal capital, but you and I are nobodies, right? Thinking about the future, he probably wants to know us—since we’ll become important retainers."
"If that’s not the case, I won’t let you use the Müller family crest or name, you know?"
Seriana adds that, seeing me sit there dumbstruck.
You’ve got to be kidding me…
No… I never even considered that it’d go as far as involving me, not just those two…
I figured we’d settle into something like resident guests, or a retained-adventurer kind of position…
But it’s not a bad thing, is it?
"Well, that’s how it is. He has a noble title too, but if things go well, he could aim even higher. Since there are nobles in his party, if he’s thinking about marriage, he probably doesn’t want to miss this chance."
"Hmmm…"
Well, that stuff has nothing to do with me.
Let me see the upper layers—and the strength of a top-class adventurer!

And so, the day of the expedition arrived.
Together with Alec, I headed to the Adventurer Guild’s rental meeting room, where we were supposed to meet up.
I hadn’t even known this room existed, but apparently it’s used as neutral ground when multiple parties need to hold a discussion.
There’s still so much I don’t know…
"I’m Luban. Looking forward to working with you today."
Saying that, he extends his left hand to Alec and they shake.
Luban’s group was already assembled in the room, so we quickly exchanged greetings.
I’d imagined someone fussy and high-strung, but he’s a pretty refreshing, likable guy.
His gear is a sword and leather armor.
One party member is wearing a jacket instead of armor, but overall they’re all lightly equipped.
If anything, I can see why they’d want someone to take hits.
"This time, our target is a Giant Deer antler from around the middle of the upper layers. I want to acquire one. First, we’ll sprint straight to the upper layers. With us, we should be fine. Once we arrive, basically each of us will take down one at a time. If a big one shows up—like a Giant Boar or a Giant Bear—Alec, you serve as the shield. Lady Sera, you’ll scout from above. I want you to be mindful of monster groups and clashes with other adventurers. Can you do that?"
"No problem."
"I’m good too—"
His explanation is pretty thorough.
I’ve seen other adventurers throw together an ad-hoc team and it’s like, “Alright, let’s go!” “Yeah!”—but this is different.
"As for payment, we’ll sell any relics other than the target, and split the proceeds fifty-fifty between our side and yours. Holy Coins go to whoever obtains them. How does that sound?"
"Yeah. That works."
But it’s just the two of us—are they really fine with that?
It feels like I’m getting off pretty easy, though…
